Yankee Stadium (after Sargent)

Pairing:
Madame X by John Singer Sargent
Image of Yankee Stadium

Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 48" x 36"

Artist's Insights:
Q. Sargent was criticized for his portrayal of Madame Gautreau (Madame X) as being too lavish and extravagant. What is it about Yankee Stadium that encouraged you in this pairing?

A. I'm really a Red Sox fan, but couldn't find a good photo of Fenway Park! Again, being true to my modus operandi, I don't consider the semantics of my pairings and proceed to determine how the images fit visually.

It was a kick to put an elegant lady in that setting with her nose pointed in the direction of the action. Painting the crowd was a challenge but I was pleased to hear from viewers that the fans look alive.

It's quite appropriate that a New Yorker purchased this painting when it was on display in Manhattan.
