Kentucky Derby (after Picasso)

Pairing:
Woman with Feathered Hat by Pablo Picasso
Image of a Kentucky Derby racetrack

Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 24" x 28"

Artist's Insights:
Q. This three-dimensional traditional woman done in a painterly style does not look like a Picasso. Am I missing something?

A. No, "Woman with Feathered Hat" is from an early Picasso period. It's not the flat, colorful but often bizarre interpretation of a woman's face that we have come to expect from Picasso. What this portrait said to me was that I needed to focus on the flowery feathers on the hat. What better place to look for flowers than at the Kentucky Derby? Look closely at the red flowers behind the figure. They are part of the decor at the Derby. They were not painted by Picasso! This is the reverse of the observation I made in my insights on Jungle (after Picasso and Rousseau) in another painting on my site. There Picasso painted the woman's hair; in this painting, he did not paint the flowers.

Original for sale.
