Artist's Insights:
Q. This is not your first painting in this style. Why did you go back to it?
A. Over the years, I became more and more satisfied with the earlier "Dancers (after Renoir and Miro)" and I looked for an opportunity to revisit the transparency technique.
Velazquez's Philip IV of Spain with its large expanse of black gave me the opportunity. Where before I had to paint black colors showing through a white background, now I was working with white colors superimposed on black. I must say the little eggplants were not affected by the color experimentation, however.
