Q. This painting is part of the Modigliani series, so you had a series of foregrounds chosen. How did you go about choosing the second pairings?
A. It was mainly a question of design and syntax. Obviously, the figure's rounded shoulders and arms repeat the arch of the juke box. The second consideration was color. The unity of the pairings was achieved when I painted the background beige to match the model's blouse. Other details such as the symmetrical letters and notes behind her head and the pink highlights in her face gave me the go-ahead.
