Bantam Bread (after Manet)

Pairing:
A Bar at the Folies-Bergère by Edouard Manet
Photo of a display at the Bantam Bread bakery, CT

Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 28" x 37"

Artist's Insights:
Q. The bread has a name and I imagine, a location. Is this a place you frequent?

A. Yes, when we lived in the area, I would stop by weekly for a French loaf and sometimes get to talk with the owner, Niles Golovin, when he wasn't busy. When I saw the rack of bruscetta, I wanted to photograph it right away. I was fascinated by the arrangement of verticals and horizontals.

It seemed so appropriate to place Suzon from Manet's "A Bar at the Folies-Bergère" in front of the display of bruschetta. I included part of Niles's kitchen and added his basket of salami to to the counter items on the Manet painting.
