Artist's Insights:
Q. There must have been any number of choices to replace the mirror image painted by Picasso. How did you settle on one of Renoir's women?
A. Before I decided on the right choice for the mirror image, I had to decide that I wanted to replace what was there. I wanted the same proportions for the two figures. I wanted it to be believable that the Picasso figure could see her form in the mirror. When I came upon the Renoir, I was amazed at the similarity. The part in the hair, the eyes, the lips, the bosom — all related to a mirror image. In fact, I wondered if Picasso had used the Renoir as a model. But the salient feature of this painting, I think, is the arm that crosses over to the other side. There are many other relationships that I discovered after painting was completed. I consider it one of my best works.
Years later, I met an artist, Russell Connor, who worked into somewhat the same vein as I do. He also used the Picasso image combining it with Madame X by Sargent. We had a nice visit at his studio in New York City.
