Artist's Insights:
Q. Madame de Pompadour is such a well-known figure in the annals of French royalty. One would expect a more suitable background for her would be a tapestry from Versailles. What do you say to that?

A. Very true. However, I'm more interested in a different appeal to the viewer. I'm interested in finding images that fuse colors, shapes, lines, and shadows. I see this painting as a study in tonality. There's a cold, steeliness throughout from the locomotive wheels, the silvery gray-beige tones surrounding them, the blueness of Mme Pompadour's dress and even her facial expression. This is achieved basically by the use of two colors: silvery beige and blue with a hint of pink. The painting grows on me the more I view it!
