Artist's Insights:
Q. You have used Disney many times, especially in your Fragments. What is it about the Disney characters that appeal so much?
A. There are so many of them! I feel indebted to the Disney Company because of my frequent use of their images. Their shapes, color palettes, graphic elements and overall designs are easy to work with. Here I'm not using an animated or comic character. I combined the exterior of a Disney store in Manhattan with a Christus portrait. I'm fascinated by the angle of the figure against the angle of the lighted sign featuring the Disney script bordered in black. The black strips harmonize with the young girl's hat and it even appears that the hat's chin strap is actually part of the sign's bottom border.
