Q. A feeling of love characterizes the couple in this painting. Should we expect that it is so powerful that it transports them into mid-air?
A. This seems to be what Chagall is portraying. In fact, a little searching reveals that his painting was created just a few weeks before he and his wife Bella were married. I carried the floating, dreamlike atmosphere a bit further by having the couple rise even higher off a red carpet into Keith Haring's world. The pink and grey colors in Haring's work is compatible with the decor surrounding the Chagall lovers in the original.
